Gujarat launches school-on-wheels for salt pan workers’ children

Times of India: Gandhinagar: Wednesday, 24 June 2026.
Gujarat govt on Tuesday introduced ‘Ranshala’, a school-on-wheels for children of salt pan workers, in the Rann of Kutch. The initiative was launched to coincide with Praveshotsav, state govt’s annual school enrolment drive.
Deputy chief minister Harsh Sanghavi flagged off 28 specially refurbished GSRTC buses, which will function as mobile schools. Each bus can accommodate more than 20 children. It is equipped with solar-powered televisions so students can also benefit from govt’s online classes. “The aim is to ensure that children of families working in salt pan areas do not have to travel far for education,” a statement quoted the minister as saying.
Sanghavi added that buses that had been lying unused have now been converted into high-quality classrooms. Facilities include portable study tables and seating, foldable outdoor shade nets, detachable blackboards and whiteboards, notice boards, a drinking water system, a wash basin, water storage tank, a separate cabin for teachers, and a dedicated library area.
